Smart Girls Group RELAUNCH

Today's the day, friends! Thanks to a huge grant from Kenneth Cole, The Smart Girls Group is relaunching and expanding their entire website, including a huge new issue of The Smart Girl's Guide!

Last March, I was thrilled to become a writer for the fledgling magazine. It thrills me to see how far we have come as an organization and a community in such a short period of time. Emily, our Smart Starter, has been an incredible driving force behind the whole operation, and I have her to thank for my opportunity to be a part of something so grand. Her vision and focus are truly awe-inspiring.

I started off last spring writing articles for the Guide as the "Organization of the Month" columnist. Since then, I have written style articles, and am currently a style spread curator!

I highly encourage you to discover and explore our new community, especially if you are a high school or college girl. It has so much to offer, and we'd love to have you join us in our mission to share all of our smarts with the world!

SENIORS SENIORS

This is it, y'all. Today I had my last first day of high school. It's so weird to finally be the oldest in the school, when for the past three years I've looked up to, and sometimes idolized, the senior classes before me. But here we are, at the beginning of the end.

All of a sudden, it seems like life is rushing forward at me. College, graduation, prom. My last football season, my last Nationals, my last Homecoming and Turnabout. All the things that I dreamed and fantasized about for so long are finally staring me in the face.

It feels good. I'm ready (despite the fact I went to school today without even a notebook or a folder...just my Lilly Agenda).

Senior year, let's go.

How To Wear It: Tennis Skirt

I don't play tennis. I've always wanted to, but I never have really played, aside from the casual game in PE. That didn't stop me from buying the most presh, super girly tennis skirt from lululemon
earlier this summer though.

Technically, they're calling it a running skirt, but who are we kidding? It's a spandex skirt with attached shorts. Tennis skirt, running skirt; tomayto, tomahto. Point is, I'm obsessed. I honestly wear this skirt everywhere, with everything. (Buyer beware: Like most bottoms from lululemon, the skirt definitely runs a little small. I'm pretty much always a size 2, sometimes a 4, but I take a 6 in this one! I would definitely recommend trying it on in-store before buying.)

The great thing about a tennis skirt is that it is just as comfy as a pair of norts, but looks a lot more pulled together! It's great for busy days, like when I have lots of errands to run early in the day and practice later. I can't wait to expand my collection–lululemon always has new colors coming in!

Do you love tennis skirts too?

Muffy

For as long as I can remember, I've wanted a Jeep Wrangler. My closest family friends have an old, black, stick-shift one, and I have countless fun memories from when I was a kid, riding in the back in the summer with the top off and all the kids from the neighborhood piled in to go to the beach. It's the car that my best friend drove me to school in every day my freshman year (her senior year), chugging along as she tried to figure out how to smoothly drive stick. The Jeep was fun

When I got my license, I begged my parents for a car of my own. From the very beginning, I was off taking one car or another, favoring my mom's SUV.

The week after my birthday in July, my dreams came true!

How cute is she? I named her Muffy, and I am obsessed. For those of y'all who have never had the chance to drive a Wrangler, I highly recommend it. I've never had this much fun driving a car. And for those of you who have–Jeep Nation, baby–you know what I'm talking about.

I was so lucky that Muffy came with both a soft-top and a hard-top, so I plan on using the soft-top in the spring and summer when the weather is nice (this way I can easily just take it off!) and the hard-top when it gets cold.

What I'm most excited for is to get some decals for my windshield. I contemplated for a long time whether I'd put them on the front windshield or the back, but since I only want two, and I'll be using the soft-top often, I think I'll put them in the passenger side corners of my front windshield!

My decals of choice? My monogram (natch) and the University of Alabama logo (Roll Tide!).

Dixieland Monogram sells vinyl monogram decals in sizes ranging from two to six inches. I'm thinking four inches will be perfect! As for Alabama, the crimson A will work just fine for me.

I Hate Doing These Posts...

...mostly because I hate admitting that I've been a horrid, inconsistent blogger. I'm so sorry, y'all. On that note, it's roundup time!

I promised I would recap Country Thunder for you, and I have to say, it was a super fun weekend. Two of my friends and I drove up each day which was not as bad as it sounds, plus I got to use my own shower each night. Huge plus.

{First day with one of my Poms teammates!}

{Riding the bull on Day One!!}

{Day Two with another teammate!}

{Day Three}

The performers were awesome. Keith Urban rocked it out on the first night, and Brad Paisley was a huge hit. But my favorite was definitely Jake Owen on Sunday night to wrap it up.

Next highlight of the last few weeks was the Poms Barbecue. It was weird with it being the first of many "lasts" this year, but I had so much fun with my friends regardless!

 {SENIORS!}

 {My best friend and fellow captain}

 {Most of Varsity}

{The Five Best Friends}

{With 4 of our 5 wonderful new baby sophs}

This last weekend, Mama, Little Sis, and I took an impromptu trip up to Saugatuck, Michigan, complete with horseback riding, ice cream from Kilwin's, and stand-up paddleboarding! By the way, I'm obsessed with paddleboarding–so much fun and a killer workout.

{On the pier}

{Horseback riding!}

On the college front, my applications to both Alabama (ROLLLL TIDE) and LSU have been completed, and my Common App is just about done, so three cheers for being ahead of the game!

Last big announcement, the new and improved Smart Girls Group relaunches September 1st! Mark your calendars, ladies, because we have an awesome new issue of the Guide coming out as well as a new and improved Loop! Everything is going to be bigger and better and we are so happy to see our sisterhood grow.

QUEEN B

My dad got my mom tickets to Beyoncé's show at the United Center for her birthday. Long story short, something comes up with work and he finds out about a week in advance that he won't be able to go. Guess who's next in line for that one?

That's right everyone.

{via Instagram}

We had incredible seats, second row and about an equal distance from the two stages set up on either end of the floor. As in perfect. I actually felt bad for all the girls in General Admission on the floor who had to stand the whole night in their ridiculous heels.

{Before the show!}
What I Wore:
Tunic: Lilly Pulitzer | Shorts: J.Crew | Wedges: Jessica Simpson (old), similar

{At the show! Via Instagram}

Y'all, Beyoncé sure knows how to put on a show.

{via Instagram}

{THERE SHE IS}

Her dancers were phenomenal as well. I was equally impressed by their dance ability and choreography as I was by their mile-long legs.

{There was definitely a leotard theme going for the night}

Halfway through the show, a swing dropped down to the stage and she flew across the crowd on the floor to do a set on the second stage. Even better, she sang the entire time she was flying. Girl is amazing.

{She flies.}

{I wanted to dance this so badly. Fierce. Via Instagram}

It was the best concert I've ever been to. She comes back to Chicago in December, and my mom and I are already making plans to catch her show then! As Mama put it: "Some people just go to Bruce Springsteen concerts, we'll just go to Beyoncé concerts every time she's in town." Sounds good to me.

And as if this week couldn't get any better, I'm driving up today with my friends for the first day of the Country Thunder music festival in Twin Lakes, WI!! On the line-up today: Parmalee, Dustin Lynch, Little Big Town, and Keith Urban. I can't contain myself! A full weekend recap post will be coming your way next week.

Have you ever been to a Beyoncé concert?

C. Orrico

Last week, I found myself in quite the jam. I'd been lusting after the Lilly Sarasota Tunic, but they were all out of my size in the print I wanted (life is hard, I know). Normally I would have just given up, saying it wasn't meant to be, but I was ordering for the Beyoncé concert on Wednesday (YES BEYONCÉ). And being the resourceful girl I am, I immediately began googling for my blouse.

The first link that came up was for C. Orrico. The name sounded vaguely familiar from other blogs, so I clicked the link. Sure enough, there was my top! After a little fact checking to make sure the site was legit, I placed my order.

C. Orrico, much like The Pink Pelican and In The Pink, is a Lilly Pulitzer Signature Store–a retailer licensed to sell Lilly items. They usually have their own sales, whereas the Lilly website itself rarely hosts sales (except for Endless Summer and New Year Cheer!). Like in my case, they can swoop in to save the day when something is sold out on the main Lilly website. It's great to have these stores in your back pocket, you never know when you may need them!

{How cute is the packaging? I'm a sucker for pink and green!}

I shipped my order with standard UPS Ground and was thrilled when it showed up on my doorstep yesterday! The tunic fits perfectly, and I could not be more happy with it. I ordered the small and am definitely glad I didn't go up anymore–I would have been swimming in it! I plan on wearing it Wednesday with white chino shorts and nude wedges....I just wish my gold monogram necklace was here!

Have you ever shopped with a Lilly Pulitzer Signature Store? What has your experience been like?

Spirit Football Jersey

Back in April, I visited Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama. (Still can't believe I never got around to posting about that. It was an incredible weekend and I fell in love with the school and the campus.) While there, I stopped in an adorable boutique on University Boulevard, called Expeditions. Expeditions carries brands like Patagonia, Columbia, and Frye, in addition to my favorite Alabama spiritwear brand: Tuskwear.

I also found the perfect shirt for summer nights and lazy days: the Spirit Football Jersey.

{Buy this one here}

I bought the jersey above at Expeditions and get compliments on it all. The. Time.

I first saw this style on the Southern Shirt Co. website, and fell in love with the comfy, oversized fit and the unique printing across the back. When I got mine, I realized that it was basically a perfect shirt for any occasion. It's thicker and heavier than a regular long sleeve t-shirt, but a lot lighter than a sweatshirt. I wear mine with leggings and riding boots in colder months and chino shorts and Jack Rogers once it gets warm. Just last night, it turned out to be the perfect coverup at a pool party!

I think the best part about the Spirit Football Jersey is that you can get them customized for your own use! I've seen lots of sororities that get them made, and I'm thinking about adding them to our Poms Spiritwear order!

Do you have a Spirit Football Jersey? Are you as obsessed with it as I am?

Last Week

Yes, last week rocked.

I turned 17.

{My best friends surprised me with a dinner reservation to my one of my favorite places downtown: Bull and Bear!}

I got a car.

{Muffy and Me. Isn't she gorge?!}

I celebrated my favorite holiday ever.

 {Who doesn't love the Fourth?}

Now let me just say, I got countless compliments on the tank I wore on the 4th. It's from The Fraternity Collection (formerly known as The Frat Collection), but I picked it up from a local store called Country Classics. I got a medium because I wanted it to be a little oversized, and that worked perfectly. I think I would have been swimming in a large! The quality is also top notch–good fabric for the pocket, supersoft cotton on the tank–I definitely recommend the brand, plus all of their shirts are fully customizable on the website!

And on top of all this goodness, I also found not one, but TWO part-time nannying jobs that I can balance with each other and still have time to dance. How great is that?

Happy 4th of July!!!

Happy 4th, y'all!! I'll be spending my favorite holiday at a parade with my boyfriend, the beach with my friends, and a barbecue and fireworks with all my friends later tonight. Tomorrow, I'll be at the boyfriend's country club for a carnival and more fireworks. Sounds like a perfect two days, doesn't it?

How are you celebrating the 4th?

What To Wear: Fourth of July

My favorite holiday is close upon us! I'm in love with the Fourth of July because it combines my favorite things: summer, parties, and patriotism. It's the time to celebrate all that is great about America. I'm always sporting something festive with red, white, and blue. Of course, I already have my outfits picked, but if you're still looking for inspiration, search no further.

What are you wearing this 4th of July? Do you have any fun plans? Let me know!

UDA Elite Camp Recap

This past week, I spent Tuesday through Friday at Illinois State University for a Universal Dance Association Elite Camp with my poms team. Each year, we take our varsity and junior varsity squads downstate to spend four days training intensely to qualify for the National Dance Team Championship in Orlando. I am exhausted, but it was by far the best week of camp I've ever had!

The first night, we competed our Home Routine against other schools. This was a routine we had already learned and polished, and it turned out quite well.

{Opening Pose!}

{Post Home Routine Performance: Captains + Coach}

The JV team also performed a Home Routine, and we were lucky enough to have most of our alumni who were seniors last year come support us!

{Post Home Routine Performance: Varsity (Pink), JV (Purple), and our incredible alumni!}

Both JV and Varsity were evaluated for our routines and received blue ribbons!

{Varsity with our blue ribbon! Naturally, I'm rocking a bow.}

On the second day, each dancer attending camp split up to learn different routines to be evaluated individually on the last day. I learned a Level IV mix routine combining jazz, pom, and hip-hop sections and a Level V jazz routine. Day Two is definitely the hardest physically and mentally, because you spend hours learning and internalizing choreography and doing it full out tons of times! It's important to know the routines very well in order to get blue ribbons to help your team qualify for nationals!

Day Three involved review of both routines, as well as technique classes, team routine evaluations (we got a blue ribbon there too!), and All-American evaluations. Five girls from our squad–me, the other two captains, and two other seniors–came early on Day Two and Day Three to learn an extra routine (plus our own section of choreography showcasing our best tricks) to be evaluated on for All-American recognition. All five of us were selected as All-Americans!

{One of my favorite pictures ever!}

Day Three also included a crazy themed afternoon to let off some steam and just have fun. The theme this year was "Summer Flashback," so naturally, we dressed up as 80's dancers!

{My best friend/fellow captain and I in our flashback outfits}

Day Four was evaluations for our individual routines. Our girls picked up almost all blue ribbons, qualifying us for Nationals! I was also selected by the staff to receive an invitation to apply to be on UDA Staff next year, a huge honor. Unfortunately for me, I'll have to wait until next year because I won't be 18 by the deadline. But still, being invited had been a dream of mine, and it came true!

Because we dance up to twelve hours each day at camp, it's super important for us to stay hydrated. It's a pain to wait in line at the water jugs and it's also super inconvenient when your water bottle runs out, so I painted monogrammed water jugs in our school colors for me and for one of the JV captains who I'm super close with.

It was quite the project, but they turned out great! I had never painted a cooler or a jug before, so Pinterest and The Cooler Connection Facebook Group were extremely helpful. We love them!! And we only had to fill them once each morning at breakfast!

I honestly couldn't have asked for a better, more fulfilling camp experience for my senior year. I absolutely love camp, and I am so blessed to have gotten everything I've wished for at camp this past week. I'm heartbroken that I can't apply for staff for next year, but I'll definitely be putting in an application once I turn 18!
