Today, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Snowball program put on by my school's Student 2 Student organization, which promotes a drug and alcohol free lifestyle. I spent my day at the workshop exploring the idea of personal strengths and weaknesses, spending time in small and large groups, and listening to two awesome keynote speakers.
My favorite part about Snowball, by far, was the "warm-fuzzies." Each attendee was given a yarn necklace with a ton of small yarn pieces attached. Throughout the day, we tied our yarn pieces on others' necklaces as we gave a compliment to them or shared something we admired about them. It felt so good, not only to receive warm-fuzzies, but to give them! I was touched by the nice and positive things I heard around me and was able to find something positive to say about everyone there, even the people I didn't know too well.
Activities like Snowball are, I think, what set South apart from other high schools. These are the activities that bring students together, from all different grades and social circles. I forged bonds today with people I never would have even had the opportunity to meet if it weren't for Snowball. Through meeting everyone, and listening to their stories of strength and overcoming weaknesses, I was empowered to strengthen myself in ways I would have never thought possible.
It is a day I will never forget.
